In the Beginning God…

In the Beginning God... 1

In the Beginning, God… A question I was asked by each one of my children when they were small was ‘where did I come from?’. That’s a tough question to answer, especially if they are too young for the-birds-and-the-bees talk. My son – our youngest – had the hardest time with that question. His sisters were here before he was, and he could not fathom how they could be here, and he was not. An even harder question my children asked was ‘Where did God come from?’.

What a brain-sputtering question! Genesis 1:1 says “In the beginning God….” God was here before the beginning of creation. He is an eternal being, which means He has always been and always will be. It’s far easier to understand how He will continue to be rather than that He has always been.

Why do we have such a problem understanding God? I believe it’s because we use our laws of physics and science to define who He is. He may have created those laws, but He can’t be defined by them. God Himself told us in the book of Isaiah that He is not of our world or our ways. So, why do we try and make Him conform to our science? We have a strong need to understand and to explain. While it’s not a bad thing, the problem arises when it interferes with our relationship with God or causes us to humanize Him. He defies human definition or any law of science we discover. All He desires from us is faith, trust and love. We aren’t required to understand Him, because we never will.

When we build a relationship with Him, He will reveal His nature and His ways to us. To try and figure God out before we build a relationship with Him is futile. Humans have a strong need to be able to see, touch and hear something to understand it. However, as we grow closer to the Lord, He will become visible to us. We’ll hear Him and most certainly feel Him. Need tangible proof there is a God? Just observe how intricate His creation is! Look at how our bodies work, study a plant, hold a newborn baby, and stand on a beach and watch the ocean as it rolls to the shore. Could all that really have been just an accident or a bang? Everything in creation is complex, intricate, and it works by very precise laws. Because He is not governed by anything of this earth, His power is beyond what we can ever hope to understand or imagine. He can do things that defy explanation like heal the sick, comfort the broken-hearted. He changes lives.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways. Isaiah 55:8
