In Harold Mc Grath’s novel, The Ragged Edge, one of the Chinese characters takes some American tourists on a ride through a town. The tourists notice that many homes have pigs and chickens on the rooftops. When asked why the people did this, the character informs them it was to ward off the devil and stated, “I believe we Chinese have the right idea. The devil is on top, not below. We aren’t between him and heaven: he is between us and heaven.” I thought this statement insightful and thought provoking and have to agree that the devil is between us and heaven.
Often we think of the devil as living only in hell or down below. Or perhaps you don’t believe he exists at all. It has been said that the devil’s greatest deception is making people believe that he does not exist. But he does and roams the earth. If you don’t believe it, all you have to do is look around you to see his handiwork.
He is in the appalling words or wrong attitudes that come out of people’s mouths. Movies and television shows are filled with bad attitudes, explicit violence and sex. There are wars in foreign countries and on our own streets and the abuse of drugs and alcohol is now running rampant. Our society worships things such as money, athletes, movie stars, and television personalities, not the Lord. The devil has made inroads into our society and is making his ways acceptable more and more every day.
He joyfully stands between us and heaven. He has changed our view of heaven because it has been nearly obliterated or redesigned to take the Deity out of it. Christianity was once considered mainstream and is now maligned and considered passé.
The devil with the help of mankind is doing his best to get the name of Jesus and our belief in him and God the Father and His Holy Spirit wiped off the face of the earth. If you don’t believe it, just look how Christianity is treated in the press and on television. Look how the true meaning of Christmas and Easter have become politically incorrect. It is such a sad thing for the hope that only God can give through Himself, His Son and His Spirit to be slowly sucked off the face of the Earth.
Sadly, it is going to take more than putting chickens and pigs on our rooftops to ward off the sway that the devil has in this world. With so many against Christianity and God, it will take courage for each person to take a stand. Each person must make moral choices made about how one speaks, treats others, stands up for what is right, and to not be afraid or ashamed to open the Bible and read, pray to God for wisdom and for our leaders, and to meet in churches with those who have the same beliefs. One must take a look at priorities and make sure they are in line with what is good, pure, moral, right and loving.
We all have it in our power to remove the devil from between us and heaven/God. If each person can clean up things in his/her own life, begin to stand for what is right, moral and good, and seek out God and grow in his/her faith, then our world will begin to change. The devil will not be able to stand for very long. The toxic, evil environment that is slowly forming will begin to reverse.
Change only comes one individual at a time. When each person sees the need to look to the Lord and do what is right, moral and good, then others are encouraged and inspired to do the same. Slowly it spreads to other people as each person believes and knows he/she needs to change for the best and for what is right and needs to have a relationship with God. After all, it is not about what we or others believe to be right, but what is right in the sight of God that matters.
and alert. The devil prowls around like
a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
